Behind the Scenes at Airspection: A Day of Drone Testing in Rural Scotland

At Airspection, every test day is an adventure as we push the limits of drone technology.

At Airspection, the journey to perfecting our drone technology starts long before the drone takes to the skies. Every test day is the result of meticulous planning, rigorous risk assessments, and a deep commitment to safety and precision. Here’s a glimpse into what goes into testing our drones.

The Pre-Flight Preparation

Our test days begin with thorough preparation in our workshop in Glasgow. Before we even think about heading out, we conduct extensive risk assessments, review all drone systems, and check the weather conditions for the flight day. This careful planning ensures that everything runs smoothly when we’re out in the field.

We’re firm believers in the power of checklists—after all, they played a crucial role in NASA’s moon missions. Our process is no different: before departure, we double-check everything, from weather conditions to equipment readiness. With everything in order, we set out for our (not so) top-secret test site just outside Glasgow.

On-Site Testing

Once on location, we conduct an on-site assessment to ensure the area is safe and suitable for testing. The test site is chosen specifically for its open and remote environment, which minimises risk and disturbance to third parties. We then set up our command unit and prepare the drone, connecting the batteries and running through another checklist before we’re ready to fly.

With everything set, the drone takes off vertically, closely monitored by our pilot and observer who maintain a safe distance throughout the operation. The first order of business is to perform basic flight checks and test emergency procedures to ensure everything is functioning as expected. We then move on to a series of predetermined tests designed to evaluate the drone’s mission-critical functions.

Recording and Analysis

Throughout the flight, we record detailed data, including footage and flight logs. This information is crucial for retrospective analysis, allowing us to review the drone’s performance and make any necessary adjustments for future tests.

A True Scottish Experience

Scotland’s unpredictable weather is both a challenge and a benefit for our testing. The harsh, offshore-like conditions we often encounter are perfect for simulating the environments our drones will face in real-world applications. Whether it’s wind, rain, or cold, Scotland never fails to provide us with the testing conditions we need.

After the tests are complete, it’s time to pack up and head back to the office—often to warm up after a long day in the elements! The data collected during the day is invaluable and forms the foundation for further refinements to our technology.

At Airspection, every test day brings us one step closer to perfecting our drones, ensuring they’re ready to perform in even the most challenging conditions. Stay tuned for more insights as we continue to push the boundaries of drone technology.
